Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F).
  2. In a skillet, heat olive oil and sauté onion and garlic until soft.
  3. Add ground meat; cook until browned.
  4. Stir in crushed tomatoes, oregano, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 10 minutes.
  5. In a greased baking dish, layer half the sliced potatoes, then half the meat sauce.
  6. Sprinkle with half the mozzarella and Parmesan.
  7. Repeat layers with remaining potatoes, sauce, and cheese.
  8. Pour heavy cream evenly over the top.
  9. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  10. Uncover and bake another 15 minutes until golden and bubbly.
  11. Let rest for 10 minutes before slicing. Garnish with parsley if desired.

For a white sauce version, substitute the tomato sauce with a béchamel.
